چکیده

HST NICMOS observations of a sample of 24 luminous (LIGs: LIR[8− 1000μm] = 10L⊙) and ultraluminous (ULIGs: LIR ∼10 L⊙) infrared galaxies are presented. The observations provide, for the first time, high resolution HST imaging of the imbedded 1.1 2.2 μm nuclear regions of these mergers. All but one of the ULIGs are observed to have at least one compact (50-200 pc) nucleus, and more than half contain what appear to be blue star clusters. The warm infrared galaxies (i.e., the transition sources) are observed to have bright nuclei which account for most of the light of the galaxy. This, combined with the tendency for the light of ULIGs to become more centrally concentrated as a function of increasing wavelength, implies that most of their energy is generated within a region 50-200 pc across.

Nicmos Observations of Interaction-triggered Star Formation in the Luminous Infrared Galaxy Ngc 60901

High-resolution 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 km imaging of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6090 obtained with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope is presented. These new observations are centered on the two nuclei of the merger and reveal the spiral structure of the eastern galaxy and the amorphous nature of the western galaxy. The nuclear separation of 3.2 kpc km s~1 Mpc~1) indicates that NGC (H0 \ 75 ...

Comparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies

The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...

The Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies

We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...

Ultraluminous galaxies in the local universe (z≤0.2) emit the bulk of their energy in the mid and far-infrared. The multiwavelength approach to these objects has shown that they are advanced mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Galaxy-galaxy collisions took place on all cosmological time-scales, and nearby mergers serve as local analogs to gain insight into the physical processes that lead to t...
